An Egyptian lawyer has been jailed on charges of using Facebook to disturb the peace of the country.

The criminal court sentenced the rights lawyer, Mohamed Ramadan to 10 years in prison and will also serve five years of house arrest.

Ramadan has also been handed a social media ban for what the court described as using social media to “destabilize the general order” and “harm national unity and social peace.”

The lawyer based in Alexandria was jailed based on a controversial 2015 counter-terrorism law which covers calling for the use of violence through social media.
