Nigerian arrested in New York for robbing four banks

A Nigerian is reported to have been arrested by police in New York on charges of allegedly robbing four banks in Manhattan.

Abdullahi Shuaibu, 53, was arrested on Monday for the alleged crime he committed within two months.

He robbed the four banks close to United Nations headquarters where he use to work.d

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Shuaibu was apprehended with the help of a retired police officer, who recognised him from a surveillance image issued out by the police.

Banks robbed by Shuaibu include Santander Bank, Bank of America and HSBC.

According to local media in Nigeria, Shuaibu once worked for the News Agency of Nigeria as UN correspondent between 2006 and 2009.

Meanwhile local media reported that the UN has denied that Shuaibu worked for the world body organisation.

A spokesman, Stephane Dujarric is quoted as saying “Contrary to what was reported, the suspect, Abdullahi Shuaibu, is not an employee of the United Nations nor is he an accredited journalist to the United Nations nor was he arrested at the United Nations. Until 2010, he was a resident correspondent representing the News Agency of Nigeria.”
