At least five women suspected of abducting and selling a boy for less than $2000 have been arrested by police in Nigeria.
According to local media the police said the gang of women which had support from some police officials abducted and sold the boy aged 3 years
Local media Punch confirmed the identities of these women as Chinonye Okere, Joy Ama, Eucheria Amadi, Pauline Uzoamaka and Nnenne Okere.
The suspects were shown to the media in Owerri, Imo state.
The Police commander for the area, Chris Ezike said his officers travelled to Lagos where they succeeded in rescuing the boy.
“To learn that they sold this handsome child for a pittance of N600 000 ($1 906) is most annoying and shameful. We will not spare them,” Ezike told the media.
Abduction and selling of children in Nigeria has been rampant in recent times. Local media claimed that many of these abducted children are forced to carry out suicide bombings by militant group Boko Haram.
According to News24 Boko Haram attacked Damasak in November 2014, took control of the town, and abducted children between ages 2 and 17 years.
