The Zimbabwean pastor activist who has been standing trial on charges of subversion has been freed by a Magistrates court.

Pastor Evan Mawarire who is a critic of President Robert Mugabe, went on trial on Monday after his arrest for the second time for the offence of attempt to subvert the government.

He is already facing a separate charge of subversion but that trial is taking place at a high court which is due to continue hearing on Thursday.

The charges were brought against him following protests against President Mugabe last year. The protests were to demand changes to the handling of the Zimbabwean economy.

Reuters reported that the Magistrates court ruled that Mawarire’s rights have been violated following prolonged stay in detention after his arrest.

The Zimbabwean law does not allow for continuous detention of suspects beyond 48 hours without court order.

Mawarire in June also participated in a protest by university students which sort to promote violence. The 40-year-old could face a jail term of 20 years if convicted by the high court.
