The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Joseph Kabila has assured the United Nations that killers of two UN investigators in the central African country will be punished.

Michael Sharp, a U.S. citizen, and Zaida Catalan, a Swedish national were part of a group of experts monitoring a sanctions regime imposed on Congo by the U.N. Security Council.

They went missing in March near the village of Ngombe in the province of Kasai Central which is engulfed in conflict. Their bodies were later discovered with indications that they were deliberately killed.

Kabila told the U.N General Assembly on Saturday that his government is committed to ensuring that those responsible for their deaths are punished.

“We are determined to ensure that light is shed on the exact circumstances of this crime and to ensure that this horrendous act … will not remain unpunished,” Kabila said.
