Madagascar: 8 children die after eating turtle

Officials in Madagascar have confirmed the death of eight children who consumed sea turtle meat in the northern part of the country.

The health officials in the southern African country said the children died after suffering acute food poisoning believed to have been caused from the meat.

On Tuesday a health official told the media “Twenty-seven people suffered food poisoning, of which eight died between January 8 and January 9 after eating sea turtle”.

Officials said those who died were all children.

Last year eight people also died from acute food poisoning in the same province, Antsiranana, after eating contaminated sardinella fish.

Experts have warned against the consumption of sea turtles and 24 other fish species due to how toxic they are.

Last year four persons in Ghana died after consuming a particular kind of fish, called puffer which officials said were poisonous.
