Some Boko Haram militants killed one of their commanders who tried to surrender to Nigerian authorities.

The murdered commander had planned to surrender and handover hundreds of hostages to the Nigerian military.

AFP reports that two sources on Sunday confirmed the news about the death of Ali Gaga.

Gaga was shot and killed on Thursday by the Boko Haram militants who discovered his plan.

The murdered commander according to sources wanted to surrender to Nigerian troops fighting the jihadist group in the Lake Chad region.

He wanted to handover 300 hostages being held by the Islamists before turning himself in.

One source was quoted by the AFP as saying that “The new leadership of the faction got to know of his (Gaga) plans and executed him”.

On Monday Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari promised to equip security officials to fight the militants.

Boko Haram since 2009 has been wreaking havoc across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
