Mali’s military junta, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP) which overthrew former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta has been dissolved.

According to a government decree the dissolution comes exactly five months after the junta staged the coup.

The decree was signed by the transitional President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane.

The junta remained in place even after the transfer of power to an interim civilian government following the 18 August 18 coup.

Its dissolution was among demands made by the regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).

Senior military personnel still hold several key posts in a 25-member transitional government.

The ministries of defence, security, territorial administration and national reconciliation are all led by colonels.
