The government of South Africa has announced it is suspending importation of meat from Brazil over the recent scandal in the South American country’s meat processing industry.
The decision was announced by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in South Africa on Wednesday.
Already countries like China and Canada have suspended some meat imports from Brazil compounding the woes of Brazil’s meat processing industry. The EU is also demanding a partial ban.
There is also another ban coming from Chile. Japan, another principal market for Brazil has also said it was considering issuing a notice to customers.
Police in Brazil are investigating reports of payment of bribes to conceal unsanitary conditions in the country’s meatpacking facilities.
At least 30 people have been arrested with many raids taking place at processing plants.
A poultry-processing plant run by the multinational BRF group and two meat-processing plants operated by the local Peccin company have also been shut down by authorities.
