The president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma is coming under intense pressure to step down following recent controversy over his cabinet reshuffle.
The country’s influential trades union federation COSATU has called on Mr. Zuma to resign. The union’s Secretary General Bheki Ntshalintshali is reported to have said that Mr. Zuma is no longer the “right person” to lead the country.
There is already a motion in South Africa’s parliament filed by the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) calling for a ‘no-confidence’ vote on President Zuma.
The speaker of the parliament, Baleka Mbete said on Sunday she would consider the request in a televised news conference.
Zuma’s sacking of his finance minister last week shook South African markets and seems to be an action threatening to split the ANC.
Jacob Zuma is also reported to be considering to quit his job next year under a special deal from his African National Congress (ANC) party.
Reuters reported that two senior party source confirmed that the special deal will see Mr. Zuma stepping down atleast 12 months before his tenure ends.
Haven served his two terms as leader of the African National Congress (ANC), Mr. Zuma is to be replaced at a party conference in December, while he stays on until elections in 2019, but that might not happen.
