Gabonese skipper Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has won the top goalscorer award in the German Bundesliga where he plies his trade with Borussia Dortmund. His 31 goals also helped Dortmund to clinch a Champions League spot come next season.

The German title was won by league giants, Bayern Munich, whose striker, Polish international Robert Lewandowski, was also in the race for top goalscorer going into the last day of the season.

Aubameyang scored twice in his side’s 4 – 3 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday. Fortunately for him, Lewandowski did not score on the last day in his side’s 4 – 1 victory over Freiburg.

He becomes the second African to win the award after ex-Ghana international Tony Yeboah who won it twice while playing for Eintracht Frankfurt in 1992/1993 and 1993/1994 seasons.

It is the second time in as many months that he has beaten Lewandowski to an award, in June 2016, the player was been voted player of last season by the players union, beating former Dortmund player Robert Lewandowski to second place.

He was African footballer of the year until earlier this year when Algeria and Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez dethroned him. Mahrez’s contribution to his teams Premier League triumph last year seemed to have shot him to the top prize.

Both players, however, did not have a good African Cup of Nations (AFCON) outing as they both crashed out of the group stages of the competition. It was more difficult for Aubameyang whose team failed to win a game in their group.

They played out three draws scoring twice. Their group comprised Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau – tournament debutants – and Cameroon. Hugo Broos’s side, the Indomitable Lions, went on to win the tournament beating Egypt by two goals to one.

There has been an outpouring of congrats for Aubameyang particularly on social media platform Twitter. In the midst of all that, rumours continue to deepen around his future with speculations linking him with a move away from Germany.
