Over 40 homosexuals arrested in Nigeria, to face prosecution

Police in Nigeria have arrested over 40 men alleged to be engaged in homosexual activities.

According to local media the police raided a hotel in the state of Lagos over the weekend to undertake the arrests.

Punch in Nigeria quoted a resident saying “There have been reports that the hotel harbours homosexuals. They were there this afternoon when policemen struck. About 40 of them were caught in the act.”

Local media reported that those arrested are to be charged and will appear in court soon.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, who confirmed the arrest is quoted as saying “About 42 suspected homosexuals were arrested and the hotel has been condoned off while investigation continues. They are in custody of the Lagos State Task Force and will be charged to court soon.”

Homosexuality is frowned upon and outlawed in many African countries. In Nigeria the act attracts a jail term to 14 years.
