The opposition in Uganda has vowed to mount a challenge to the decision by the country’s parliament to vote to remove the presidential age limit provision in its constitution.
The legislature on Wednesday passed the vote by two-thirds majority after days of heated debate characterized by violence.
The passage of the vote means the constitution would now be amended to ensure that there would be no limit on the age of any individual seeking to run for president in the east African country.
Uganda’s parliamentary opposition leader Winne Kiiza has said that she will challenge the age limit law passed on Wednesday.
The opposition claims the new law is to just allow current president, Yoweri Museveni who is 73 to run for a sixth term in office in the next presidential election.
Ms Kiiza says there is a possible of going to court to challenge the passage of the new law.
Another opposition MP, Mbwaketamwa Gaffa is quoted by the BBC as saying that “What we (MPs) did yesterday is real raping the constitution in favour of one person; President Museveni. Ugandans are so bitter. When the president ascents to the bill, it might be legal, but it will be illegitimate, and we are going to challenge it.”
