Over 200 people have been reported to have sustained injuries in a train crash at the Geldenhuys train station in Germiston in South Africa on Tuesday.

News24 reported that officials of South Africa’s emergency response team spokesperson Russell Meiring said “Once the patients have been treated, they will be transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.”

“The exact details surrounding this incident are not yet known, but local authorities are on the scene and will be launching an investigation into the matter,” Meiring added.

Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng is also quoted as saying that “About 149 [people] were taken to various hospitals for treatment. I must emphasise that there are moderate injuries. We do not have any critical or serious injuries. No fatalities have since been reported.”

Only last week officials in South Africa’s Free State confirmed the death of 19 people following a passenger train crash. The train crashed into a truck and a vehicle near Kroonstad.
