Ivorian soldiers have reportedly launched an attack on a weapon base in the country’s second largest city, Bouake setting it on fire after looting the facility.

The incident was carried out on Tuesday with some residents of the city claiming they heard gunshots and heavy weapons fire between two rival factions.

The situation according to Reuters has now calmed down as residents resume normal activities.

One of the leaders of a faction involved in the attack was quoted by Reuters as saying that they “entered the CCDO camp around midnight and took all of their arms and ammunitions. Their troops fled the camp but we are looking for them.”

Another leader of the soldiers who launched the attack was also quoted as saying that they “burned the CCDO camp and destroyed everything inside. Even their service vehicles were burned.”

Several army mutinies took place in Bouake last year over bonuses and promotions with the government of Ivory Coast resolving some of their concerns.
