Prison Break: 16 inmates escape from Joburg prison

Sixteen inmates of a prison facility in Johannesburg called the “Sun City” are reported to have broken jail and escaped.

Local media Eye Witness News reported that prison officials have confirmed the escape of these inmates and have begun search for their re-arrest.

The prisoners are said to have broken through the iron bars of the prison windows. They also broke a portion of the wall before escaping through the fence.

A prison’s department official, Singabakho Nxumalo is quoted as saying that the prisoners “broke the iron bars on the window, went through to break a portion of the wall and escaped through the fence.””

“The investigation is still ongoing but it is something we are taking quite seriously as the department,” Nxumalo added.

The incident occurred on Monday morning as further details about the incident continue to emerge.
