Stranded Nigerians in Russia sleep in the open

Some Nigerians who travelled to Russia to watch the world cup are stranded in the East European country.

Dozens of them were hoping to secure jobs in Russia haven made the trip to support their national team, but that did not happen.

Nigeria were eliminated from the games at the group stages and these supporters should have returned home by now.

Their failure to return home early has left them stranded without help.

Pictures of some of these Nigerians sleeping in the open close to the Nigerian Embassy in Russia has gone viral on social media.

A Russian NGO is said to be providing some assistance to these Nigerians.

A DW reporter in Russia shared pictures of these stranded Nigerians. He reports that the local NGO will now be putting them in a hostel just for two days.


Nigerians falling victims 

Prior to the start of the world cup, a plot to traffic women from Nigeria to Russia for sex work was exposed.

That exposure was made by Nigerian officials with the support of anti-slavery activists.

Nigerian authorities said their investigations showed that preparations have been ongoing to send these women to Russia and exploit them.

Russian officials had announced plans to allow spectators into the country for the global showpiece with just a ticket and a fan pass.

The traffickers were intending to exploit this policy to traffic women from Nigeria.
