Al-shabaab militants have killed five Kenyan soldiers in an attack in the country’s north coastal Lamu County.
The attack was carried out on Wednesday, officials have said.
Reuters reports that a local government official said the attack happened between the areas of Majengo and Bodhei.
The soldiers reportedly died after their truck ran over an improvised explosive device.
Reutes quoted the official as saying that “We heard a blast. Shortly after, KDF (Kenya Defence Forces) choppers were patrolling in the air”.
Meanwhile the Kenya Defence Forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Paul Njuguna told Reuters that six soldiers were injured.
He also said two of the soldiers are in critical condition but said no one is dead.
Al-Shabaab’s spokesman for military operations, Abdiasis Abu Musab confirmed the attack. He put the death toll at nine.
The militant group continues to carry out deadly attacks in Kenya and other parts of east Africa.
