South African security officials have arrested an elderly woman at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

She was found with heroin hidden in her handbag, according to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The 74-year-old woman who was in a wheelchair was traveling to central Europe before her arrest by customs officers.

The customs officials intercepted the stashed heroin on Thursday, according to SARS spokesperson Sicelo Mkosi.

News24 reported that officials found a powdery substance concealed in hidden stashes in her bag.

After a test was conducted it was revealed that the substance was heroin. It had an estimated street value of almost $33,000 (R500 000).

The woman has been detained on charges of drug possession and attempted smuggling.

In many parts of Africa woman often are used as couriers for banned substances like drugs.
