Thousands of young people in Rwanda have been duped by fake conference organizers.

Over two thousand young people were conned into paying $5 online to attend a conference in the capital Kigali.

They were hoping to attend a wealth and fitness conference.

But the organizers never showed up for the event leaving many of the young people distressed.

Police in Rwanda are now investigating the incident, hoping to understand how these young people were conned into paying the registration fee.

The BBC reports that the venue for the event was full with hopeful participants but organisers did not show up.

Some of the hopeful participants claimed they were promised $197 should they register and attend the event.

Rwanda’s Youth Minister Rose Mary Mbabazi told the disappointed young people this should serve as a lesson for them.

She said many of them should be careful of “empty promises of easy money” online.
