South Africa: Former footballer Marc Batchelor shot dead

Former Bafana Bafana, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker, Marc Batchelor has been shot dead near his home by unknown gunmen.

Local media reported that he was shot by the gunmen who were on motorbikes in Bryanston, Johannesburg on Monday evening.

His family has confirmed with shock the news of his death.

Gauteng police also confirmed that Batchelor was shot several times in his car while on his way to Olivedale.

Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini, said he was driving with his gardener when he was attacked at around 18:00 by two gunmen.

“He was shot through the window several times and died at the scene,” Dlamini said.


Police say the motive behind the attack is still unknown as they launch investigations into the incident.

An associate of Batchelor, Nafiz Modack told News24 that, “My comment [to] those who shot him[is they] should be afraid, very afraid. I know who was after him.”

Batchelor in the past has been involved in a number of highly publicised altercations.

He was also a witness in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial where he testified about the former Paralympian’s temper.

South African continues to witness a wave of crimes with many killings reported over the past months in parts of the country.

Many of these killings are inspired by activities of gangs.
