The 2018 Global Media forum hosted by Germany’s international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle has opened in Bonn, Germany.

The forum is focusing on global inequalities across societies and finding ideas to tackle those gaps.

The Forum has brought “together decision-makers and influencers from the worlds of journalism, digital media, politics, business, civil society and academia.”

Expectations

The organisers of the forum are hoping this event offers “a unique interdisciplinary approach to tackling one of the defining challenges of our time: global inequalities.”

Some of the areas participants are expected to focus on are “racism to income inequality, the digital divide and power imbalances – inequalities are deeply rooted and complex.”

Getting the media to understand “the dimensions and effects of inequalities”, and how technology can be used both as a galvanizer and an equalizer and providing equal access to knowledge and power are on the Agenda.

The Minister-President of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet told the gathering that the media must lead the conversation in ensuring that technology doesn’t create inequalities.

He said digitalization has come with its benefits but that comes with some challenges which could impact negatively on media work and democracies.

Deutsche Welle’s 2018 Global Media Forum is in its 11th edition on the 65 anniversary of DW.

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel in a pre-recorded speech congratulated DW on its anniversary. She wished DW overcomes its challenges to provide better media coverage.
