The President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni has declared war on crime after the death of a lawmaker from his ruling-party.

MP Ibrahim Abiriga, was killed last week by men wearing hoods and riding motorbikes. Museveni said his government intends banning motorcycle riders from wearing hooded jackets.

His declaration has been backed by the country’s police service chief.

Museveni’s pain

The Ugandan President has also described the killers of the MP as ‘pigs’ in reaction to the incident.

He is quoted by local media as saying that “It is time for us to wake up and say ‘Stop this!’ – and we have the capacity.”

“We are, therefore, going to ban covering of heads with hoods while riding. And the helmets must have a number that can be seen clearly at night” Museveni added.

Uganda has experienced such cruel killings in recent times, which put pressure on the police service accused of doing little to stop them.

The surge in crime has also eroded people’s trust and confidence in the police to protect them.
