An angry mob has killed three Ugandan soldiers. They were killed near Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

AFP reports that the mob had accused the soldiers of engaging in criminal activities.

A local official Peter Debele told AFP that “Three of our soldiers have been killed by a mob and investigations are going on to establish the circumstances under which the soldiers were killed”.

“Three guns have been recovered from the scene of the attack and eight people have been arrested in connection with the killing of the soldiers,” he added.

Debele also revealed that the soldiers were stopped by residents after leaving their post a few kilometres away.

They were questioned and “they handed over the guns but the mob turned rowdy and lynched them alleging they had come to rob them,” according to Debele’s account.

A Ugandan police spokeswoman was quoted by AFP as saying that a unit commander was among the dead soldiers.

Josephine Angucia says “We urge the public not to take law into their hands whenever they are faced with any challenge. They should have reported to police”.

The armed soldiers were part of a contingent that was guarding the Ugandan border point of Vurra, officials said.

This border area is known for criminal activities and the government recently said some of these criminals wear military uniforms.
