Votes are being counted in Nigerians governorship elections held on Saturday.
The elections were held in 29 states across the country weeks after the presidential election was held.
Saturday’s votes are to elect new state governors as well as local assembly representatives.
But elections did not take place in seven states namely, Kogi, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Osun, Ondo, Edo and Anambra.
Governors in those states have not finished their four-year terms yet.
President Muhammadu Buhari won the Presidential election although his rival from the opposition PDP, Atiku Abubakar disputes the results.
In that election the ruling APC won 19 states, with the opposition PDP securing 16 states as well as the capital, Abuja.
Gubernatorial elections in Nigeria are keenly contested between the ruling APC and opposition PDP.
Local media reports that election results for the state elections will be announced from Sunday.

Violence
Before election day thugs destroyed offices belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission in Akwa Ibom State.
The offices were destroyed with the use of explosives by thugs.
An eyewitness was quoted by Punch saying “The hoodlums numbering about five came in dark dresses and threw in something into the building and next thing I saw was fire.”

Friday’s incident according to local media led to the destruction of electoral materials.
