Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Friday was sworn in for a second five-year term after his electoral victory last month.
Masisi’s Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) won 67% of parliamentary seats in the October election.
The election was seen as a major test for the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) which has been in power for the past five decades.
Coming into the election, incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi could not secure the support of his predecessor, Ian Khama.
Botswana is one of southern Africa’s wealthiest and most stable nations but still has a major task of transforming its economy further.
Speaking after his inauguration has promised to diversify the Botswana’s economy and fix the country’s unemployment crisis.
He has also promised to move the economy away from excessive dependence on diamonds.
“I have committed to prioritise job creation during my tenure, particularly for our young people who are the worst affected by unemployment,” he said.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by presidents from Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
