Ghana’s female Senior National Team, Black Queens on Thursday picketed at the country’s Youth and Sports Ministry.
Local media Ultimate FM reported that the players were protesting the non-payment of their $25,000 outstanding bonuses per each player as reward for participating in various international tournaments.
The players have vowed to keep protesting until their bonuses are paid by the government. They also intend picketing at the seat of government, the Flagstaff House in the capital Accra to force a meeting with the country’s President John Dramani Mahama if his Ministers fail to address their concerns.Starr FM also reported that the Players of the Black Queens staged another protest at Ghana’s parliament compound.
One of the players’ Striker Samira Suleman told Starr FM “It’s been the same routine because we have been waiting and waiting and nothing is happening, we wanted to see the Minister at parliament which was not successful, So we will go to the sports ministry and if we don’t get any good response, then we will do everything possible today (Thursday) to see the father of the land (President) so that they will pay our money.”
The players were clad in their red jerseys carrying placards with the inscription ‘ honour your heroes, stop discrimination, we need our money’ among others.
The Black Queens placed third in the just ended Africa Women’s Nations Cup and are owed arrears from last year’s All African Games, where they won gold and the 2016 Olympic qualifiers.
Nigeria’s female team, the Super Falcons recently also demonstrated over unpaid bonuses. The government eventually settled the arrears after weeks of agitation from the players.
