Officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo say a mine accident has killed at least 30 people in the eastern part of the country.
AFP news agency reports that the accident was caused by a landslide.
Although the mine collapse occurred a week ago, miners have been trapped inside the gold mine for days.
The informal gold mine is located in Misisi, South Kivu province of DR Congo.
A local official Aime Mutipula is quoted by AFP as saying that “Proper searches only began today [Thursday].”
An NGO worker was quoted by the AFP as saying that “At least 37 people have died according to a provisional toll.”
There are fears the death toll could increase further.
