The President of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi could face an impeachment proceeding in the coming days.
It follows the filing of a motion for impeachment in the country’s parliament by a top parliament administration official.
The official, Abdikarim H. Abdi Buhsaid said in a statement on Sunday that he filed the motion with the speaker of parliament.
“We have filed an impeachment against the president of the federal republic of Somalia,” the statement said.
President Abdullahi is accused of secretly signing trade and security agreements with countries like Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The impeachment motion also claimed that the President illegally extradited criminals to some countries thereby violating Somalia’s law.
For the impeachment proceeding to take place the motion will require signatures of 92 lawmakers. Then the Parliament can debate the motion before a potential vote.
Somalia has 275 MPs and for the impeachment vote to be successful, it will require the backing of two thirds of all MPs.
