Sweden has taken in extra twenty-eight asylum-seekers after previously receiving seven refugees who were moved from Libya to Rwanda last year.

The refugees were moved from Rwanda’s emergency transit mechanism in Bugesera District, Gashora Transit Centre on Monday.

According to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Rwanda the resettlement was executed on Monday night.

It said in a statement that five more refugees would be taken in by Canada, a country that has already taken in several African refugees.

Norway is already expected to take in 600 African migrants.

Rwanda agreed to take in some 500 out of some 4,700 estimated number of refugees in custody in Libya, under a new transit mechanism.

Rwanda has so far taken in hundreds of these migrants and is expected to take in more.

Per the agreement signed, Rwanda is supposed to temporarily host the migrants evacuated from Libya to make way for proper repatriation and resettlement for them.

Those expected to benefit from these resettlement plans include refugees and asylum seekers recognized and registered by UNHCR Libya.

Others include children and youth at risk registered as refugees as well as spouses and children of asylum-seekers and refugees.

UNHCR Rwanda said on Monday that “first large group of refugees hosted in Rwanda’s ETM center has been resettled to Sweden (28).”

“Thank you Sweden and Canada for your generosity to provide renewed hopes for a new start for refugees evacuated from Libya,” the Agency added.
