Joe Biden has been elected the 46th President of the United States after securing the needed electoral college votes.

Projections by major American news networks put his number of electoral college votes at 284 exceeding the required 270.

His victory ends Donald Trump’s Presidency who remains defiant claiming he rather won the election.

Biden’s victory also means the United States will have a first black woman as vice president in the person of Kamala Harris.

The California senator, who is also the first person of South Asian descent elected to the vice presidency, will become the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in government, four years after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton.

Trump is the first incumbent president to lose reelection since Republican George H.W. Bush in 1992.
