A Chinese convict who is serving a one-year jail term for theft in Ghana, has escaped.

Wang Xiao absconded while receiving medical care at a hospital in the capital, Accra.

He was being held at the Nsawam Prison in the south of the country.

Officials of the Ghana Prisons Service say he reported being sick last Wednesday and was taken to a nearby hospital.

But he escaped from the hands of the prison officers who had escorted him to the health facility.

The Prisons Service has issued a wanted re-arrest notice of the inmate, who is reportedly standing trial in another case.

A spokesperson of Ghana’s Prisons service, Abdul Latif Adamu told local media that there is an ongoing effort to rearrest the Chinese inmate.

“We have gotten a lot of leads that are proving to be successful in what we are doing,” Adamu told Citi FM in the capital, Accra.
