Gunmen have killed at least two people and kidnapped several people in an attack on a church in Nigeria.

Police say the pastor of the church was among some of worshippers kidnapped by the gunmen.

Parishioner Joseph Bitrus told Reuters that after killing some of the members, the gunmen “later rounded up some worshippers, including the pastor, and took them into the bush.”

This attack is coming just days after gunmen also kidnapped 25 girls were abducted from a boarding school in Kebbi state.

The attack on the church in Eruku, a town in central Nigeria’s Kwara state now puts more pressure on the Nigerian government to address such incidents after US President Donald Trump threatened to intervene in what he says is the persecution of Christians.

President Bola Tinubu has already postponed a planned trip to South Africa and Angola for G20 and AU-EU summits to address the two attacks. He wants security agencies to hunt down the assailants in Kwara and also rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls.

His spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the president wants the security agencies “to do everything possible” to rescue the schoolgirls, “abducted by the bandits and bring the girls back home safe.”

Nigeria is facing an Islamist insurgency in the northeast with abductions and killings by armed gangs a frequent occurrence. There is also deadly clashes between mainly Muslim herdsmen and mostly Christian farmers in its central belt.
