The former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe on Monday evening travelled to Singapore from Harare for a medical check-up.

This would be his first foreign trip since resigning from office as President of the Southern African nation.

The 93 year old former leader has on several occasions travelled to Singapore for similar medical check-ups while in office.

Reuters reported that a state security official said Mr. Mugabe left Harare with his wife Grace and some aides.

The official is quoted as saying that Mugabe “has gone for a routine medical trip to Singapore. He was due for a check-up but events of the last few weeks made it impossible for him to travel.”

Former President Robert Mugabe had been a major political figure in his country since leading the country to independence in 1980 and was forced to resign last month after a military takeover.

He is reported to have felt relieved after agreeing to exit power in November. He was succeeded by a former ally Emmerson Mnangagwa.
