At least 27 school children have been killed in a fire outbreak at an Islamic school in Liberia.

There were two survivors who were taken to the hospital, the police said.

The victims were 10 years old and above.

Police spokesman Moses Carter said on Wednesday that “The kids were learning the Koran when the fire broke out.”

According to police the fire outbreak was caused by an electrical issue, but the police say investigations are still ongoing.

Meanwhile President George Weah has said that the fire started late on Tuesday in the suburbs of the capital Monrovia.

“My prayers go out to the families of the children that died last night in Paynesville City,” Weah said.

He adds that “This is a tough time for the families of the victims and all of Liberia.”
