Guinea’s President Alpha Condé has announced a new draft constitution despite protests last month over the move.

Protesters were worried the new draft constitution when approved would pave the way for him to stand as president for a third term.

President Condé is now expected to submit the draft constitution to the Guinean public for approval.

He has however not signaled when that would happen and whether he intends running in the next election at the end of 2020.

Previous protests were led by the National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC), a coalition of politicians and activists opposing the constitutional change.

Alpha Conde is 81 years of age and is due to end his second and final five-year term next year.

But he has not ruled out running again after coming to power in 2010.
