Ghana’s President on Sunday said in a TV broadcast that a worker at a fish-processing factory infected 533 other workers with the coronavirus.
Nana Akufo Addo said “All 533 persons were infected by one person,” referring to the infection at the fish factory.
The infection which was reported in the city of Tema not far from the capital Accra led to Ghana’s confirmed coronavius cases surging to 4,700.
Ghana’s latest case count makes it one of the leading countries with coronavirus cases but Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo said the country has also beefed up its testing regime to trace more cases.
He said with 160,501 tests since the outbreak, Ghana has done more tests per million people than country in Africa.
“The implementation of our strategy of aggressively tracing, testing and treating is our surest way of rooting out the virus,” Akufo-Addo said.
President Akufo-Addo has also extended the ban on public gatherings until the end of May.
“I have come into your homes to announce that the ban public gatherings as set out in Executive Instrument number 64 has been extended, also to end of the month i.e May 31,” he said.
Due to this latest move Ghana will maintain a ban on public gatherings such as the holding of conferences, workshops, parties, night clubs, drinking spots, beaches, festivals, political rallies, religious activities and sporting events.
The country lifted a partial lockdown imposed on some cities last month to the surprise of many and health officials have also said the country has reached its peak of infection, a claim that has been questioned by many.
