Top security allies of former Gambian leader Jammeh arrested by police

Two top security operatives of former leader of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh have been arrested. Police in the country have also confirmed the arrests which happened on Monday.

Local media reported that Yankuba Badjie, head of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and his director of operations, Sheikh Omar Jangne have been detained while investigations.

Local news portal SMBC quoted spokesperson of Gambia police, Foday Conta as saying “We have arrested Yankuba Badjie former director of NIA and Sheikh Omar Jagne director of operations. Investigations are ongoing,”

Many disappearances and killings were recorded under the now exiled Jammeh regime and these two men were at the NIA during these incidences.

President Adama Barrow who was inaugurated last Saturday has already changed the NIA to the State Intelligence Services.

The president has been rolling out new reforms in a country that has for many years not experienced freedom of speech and respect for human rights.

Human rights advocates have hailed the arrest of the two security operatives.
