More than 20 people have died from hunger in Somalia’s Jubbaland, according to government officials.
The announcement was made by officials of the Jubbaland region which is semi-autonomous on the government website.
The assistant minister of interior for the Jubbaland Mohamed Hussein is quoted by the website to have said that severe drought had killed the people over a span of 36 hours all in various towns in middle Jubba and Gedo areas.
According to Reuters, Mr. Hussein said in the report that “The people in those areas need emergency assistance”.
Most of the people struggling to access food in Jubbaland are fleeing to the Somali capital Mogadishu.
Drought in Somalia has so far killed livestock, cut harvests and left 6.2 million people, about half its population, in need of food aid.
The United Nations is asking for $825 million in aid to support countries like Somalia fight the devastating drought.
