Oil tanker drivers in Nigeria have announced an end to their strike. They had gone on strike on Monday agitating over poor working conditions and roads.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) said the drivers were prepared to cut off supply unless their demands are met.

The Nigerian government however intervened to end the crisis.

Discussions between NUPENG and the Nigerian government had not been able to stop the initial strike, but a meeting in Abuja on Monday saw the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation agreeing with NUPENG to increase transportation fees for the workers.

Reuters quoted a regional chairman for Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Charles Eleto as saying that the union called off the strike “because the federal government has intervened and promised to look into the drivers’ demands,”
