Police in Nigeria arrest 53 for celebrating gay wedding

Police in Nigeria have arrested 53 persons who took part in a gay wedding held on Saturday, at a motel in the northern city of Zaria .

According to the Herald in Nigeria, those arrested appeared in court in Zaria and were charged with offences bordering on conspiracy, unlawful assembly and belonging to a gang of unlawful offences.

The prosecutor told the court that “Information reached the police that these group of persons conspired to celebrate a gay marriage at Zaria Motel between one Faruk and Sanusi both at large.”

The suspects who are standing trial have pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them.

They have been granted bail and will reappear in court on May 8 for further hearing.

Last year the Nigeria Police Force disrupted a gay wedding in Abuja.

Many African countries have laws that ban same sex marriage despite advocacy from rights groups for people’s rights to their sexual preferences to be respected.
