Nigeria’s customs officials on Monday intercepted boats loaded with marijuana in Lagos.

According to the BBC, the seized illicit drug is worth about $1.3m and was imported from neighboring West African nation Ghana.

Nigerian officials have said that this is the biggest seizure made in recent times in Lagos.

The West African sub-region has struggled to deal with the trafficking of illicit drugs with many governments rolling out new strategies yearly.

The region over the years has become a hub for drug trafficking and usage due to porous security systems exploited by cartels.

The United Nations estimated that some 2.3 million cocaine users are in West Africa as the region has moved on from being a transit route for drugs and now a final destination.
