Thirteen prison officers in South Africa have been suspended after images of women dressed in knee-high boots and lacy lingerie entertaining inmates emerged on social media.
Pictures of these women dressed like ‘strippers’ were circulating on social media capturing wardens looking on while inmates were entertained.
Officials on Monday confirmed the authenticity of the pictures and said the incident happened on June 21 at the Johannesburg Medium Security Prison during celebrations for Youth Day.
The annual public holiday which falls on June 16 marks the 1976 killing of students by police for protesting against racially-segregated education.
The acting National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, James Smalberger told the media “The intention was never to have strippers or dancers in the facility. The dancers were obviously not approved.”
“We want to apologise to the citizens of South Africa for this incident which, indeed, is very disturbing.” Smalberger said while stating that a full investigation has been launched into the incident.
