Ghana has been hit by the deadly African swine fever with officials confirming the killing of over 400 pigs.
The outbreak has been recorded in four regions in the West African nation with fears of it spreading further.
Officials said the outbreak was detected in May and the impact since then has been devastating.
Swine fever is a highly contagious hemorrhagic disease of pigs which has no cure. Infected pigs have to be killed and the infected areas disinfected to prevent the spread.
Ghana’s national director for veterinary services department, Dr. Kenneth Gbeddy told local media Starr FM that “We confirmed (the outbreak of the virus) by laboratory examination. It has been identified in parts of the country. Whenever we have an outbreak we just go in quickly and prevent the spread.”
