Thousands of South Africans from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Wednesday marched across various cities as part of a nationwide strike against corruption and President Jacob Zuma.
All major cities including Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban participated in the protest. Leaders of Cosatu have said that the protest will be the biggest of all ‘marches’.

The Secretary General of Congress of South African Trades Union, Bheki Ntshalintshali told the media on Wednesday that “The message that we want to raise is that people should not look at state capture and corruption as something that does not affect you. It affects all of us in our daily lives.”
“The strike is about sending a message to government and the private sector that we are tired of corruption in our society,” he added.

Another partner of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP) will also join in the strike.
State capture, corruption and job losses are prominent messages protesters sent out in Wednesday’s march backed by the country’s National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac).

These agitations are coming ahead of ANC’s leadership contest later this year to determine who takes over from President Zuma as leader of the party and potential President.
