The President of Tanzania, John Magufuli has in a historic move held a meeting with his main political opponent, Edward Lowassa at the state House in Dar es Salaam.

The East African reported that the two men met on Tuesday for the first time since the 2015 elections.

Edward Lowassa who is the main opposition leader in Tanzania was also a former prime minister of the country.

President Magufuli described the former prime minister as a good politician for not insulting him during the presidential campaigns in 2015.

“We will continue to honour these elders who made their contributions… and I thank Mr Lowassa for acknowledging that we [government] have done a lot of good things,” President Magufuli said.

President Magufuli has been criticised in recent times by some of his policies considered harsh.
