Hundreds of supporters from the Kenyan opposition coalition Nasa have gathered at the Uhuru Park in Nairobi for the swearing in of their leader Raila Odinga as the “Peoples’ President”.
Odinga and his coalition party boycotted last year’s re-run presidential poll claiming the electoral commission failed to provide an even playing field for a free and fair election.
A court challenge to the victory of President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to succeed after the Supreme Court ruled that Kenyatta’s victory was legitimate.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term in November last year after winning the repeat presidential election held in October.
In October last year Odinga said the re-run poll result was “fake” and said a “people’s assembly” would swear him in on December 12 which did not take place.
The coalition scheduled Tuesday January 30, 2018 for the swearing in which has been described by the government as treasonable.
Police have in some areas stopped buses from carrying supporters to the event ground.
Some local media outlets have also been reported to have been shut down to prevent them from covering the event live.
