Police in Tanzania have arrested two men for asking Tanzanians to stage a protest against the country’s President John Magufuli.

They were arrested on Wednesday and accused of their ‘inciting’ act on social media as they call for nationwide protests on April 26.

A police official, Gilles Muroto told reporters that “These two people here were inciting others to protest on April 26, saying on social media that there is no freedom, that there is a dictatorship, which is totally false”.

“We have already warned that will not accept people testing government. We have arrested these two, let it serve as a lesson to others.” Muroto added.

The police chief further warned that any citizen that dares to stage a protest will end up with “a broken leg and go home as cripples”.

John Magufuli has been criticized for his governance style with some analysts claim he is suppressing freedom of speech especially from his political opponents.

Magufuli has already warned against the planned protests against his government saying “Some people have failed to engage in real politics and would like to see street protests every day… let them demonstrate and they will see who I am”.

The Interior Ministry of Tanzania has said people who protest would be arrested “even those who protest at home”.
