Overnight flooding has wreaked havoc in Johannesburg, with some roads closed, after trees fell on highways and some homes flooded.
Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, according to News24 confirmed emergency services personnel are on sight to deal with any major disaster.
Traffic has been described as “very bad” in the city with motorists “advised to drive carefully and abandon vehicles if [they get] stuck in the floods.”
Power outages have been reported in some northern suburbs, including Northcliff, according to local media.
The South African Weather Service has signaled that the Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal could also experience possible flooding due to the heavy rainfall.
Emergency Services officials have been sent to prone areas to be on standby to deal with any potential disaster.
An emergency service official Robert Mulaudzi was quoted as saying that “Disaster management monitoring teams have been dispatched to all seven regions of the city to monitor any eventuality and to facilitate evacuation procedures whenever there might be a need to do so since there’s a possibility of localised flooding.”
