Egyptians vote for new president

Egyptians are voting in a presidential election with incumbent Abdel Fattah al-Sisi favorite to win a second term following the withdrawal of major political opponents.

Egypt’s President al-Sisi is being challenged by only one candidate in the person of Moussa Mustafa Moussa who however supports al-Sisi.

Moussa has however rejected claims that he providing a false sense of competition. Egypt’s electoral commission has promised to ensure that the vote is fair and transparent.

Sisi, 63, led the military to overthrow Egypt’s first democratically elected President Mohamed Mursi in 2013. He was subsequently voted president and he now seeks to continue in that role for another four years.

Voting which started on Monday would last for the next three days, after citizens abroad voted earlier in the month.

Egypt, with a population of 95 million, is the largest Arab country and supporters of al-Sisi say he as brought stability to the country after the revolution and this week’s votes could be a verdict on his presidency so far.
